FEMALE Athlete of the Year: Charlie Evans

Charlie Evans has been a top athlete in her grade during her four years at CCI.  Charlie has excelled in volleyball, badminton, soccer, hockey (as a goalie) and Ultimate.  This year Charlie was the MVP in volleyball and received a Coaches Award in Ultimate.  Charlie was a key member of the Ultimate team that just missed out on winning COSSA this year, earning a silver medal.  Charlie is a strong and powerful athlete who manages to control her emotions during intense game play, allowing herself to be consistent and coachable in all types of situations.  Charlie is a comfortable leader who helps younger athletes on her team through positive encouragement.  Charlie also sets an example for others to follow by always giving 100% in the sports she competes in.

MALE Athlete of the Year: Owen Harnden

Owen Harnden is an exceptional multi-sport athlete at CCI, winning MVP’s in baseball and golf, and receiving Coaches Awards in Ultimate, Basketball and Volleyball this year.  As a key member of the basketball team Owen helped CCI secure a trip to OFSAA in Kingston this past winter.  Owen was also the top CCI pitcher on the baseball team that won COSSA and went to OFSAA last year.  The baseball and Ultimate teams won silver at COSSA this year, nearly putting Owen in a place to attend 3 OFSAA this year.  Owen threw a no-hitter this year in league play, highlighting the calibre of his abilities. Owen has a strong work ethic and dedicates himself fully to the sport team he is competing on.  Owen has incredible coordination and an effortless ability to move in games, allowing him to compete at a high level.  Owen has earned a scholarship to play baseball at Chesapeake College in Maryland where he hopes to continue to advance his baseball career.

FEMALE Athlete of the Year: Anna Crowley

Anna is a multi-sport athlete, competing for St Mary Thunder athletics during all three seasons (Fall, Winter, and Spring) for the last 3 years.  When she began at St Mary in Grade 9, she focused on Golf, Hockey and Badminton.  The last 2 years, she DOUBLED her sports commitments to SIX sports each year – Golf, Basketball, Hockey, Badminton, Tennis and Track & Field – all while maintaining a very high academic average.  Anna was an award winner in Grade 10 for golf and Badminton, while also winning the Junior Female Athlete of the Year.  Anna also qualified as an individual for OFSAA in Golf and Tennis, while also qualifying as a member of the Girls Hockey team this winter. With 1 year left to go in high school, Anna is certain to add to this impressive resume!

MALE Athlete of the Year: Drayden MacDonald

Drayden has been a multi-sport athlete every year in high school, competing for St Mary Thunder athletics during all three seasons (Fall, Winter, and Spring). Drayden was an award winner on the Alpine Ski team, leading them to OFSAA appearances the last 2 seasons. Drayden also contributed positively on the Boys Sevens and Senior Boys Rugby teams.  He was recognized as the Sevens Award winner this year at St. Mary’s. Congratulations to Drayden for his determined effort and his many contributions to school athletics.

MALE Athlete of the Year: Jonathon Aitken

Jonathon has been an award winner at CCI in Soccer and Basketball, and a stand-out athlete on the Ultimate Frisbee team.  Jonathon has represented CCI at the OFSAA level in Soccer (2023 in Windsor) and Ultimate (2024 in Lakefield).  As an athlete, Jonathon leads both by example, with incredible energy and passion, and through his strong communication skills and motivational qualities.  Jonathon has earned the respect of his peers and coaches while competing on teams during every season of his 4 years at Cobourg Collegiate Institute.

FEMALE Athlete of the Year:  Maria Linton

Maria is a very motivated young lady. Some of Maria's athletic accomplishments in 2023-24 included 1st at COSSA Track and Field 1500 metre and 3000 metre events. She was also the Senior Girls Cross Country Champion, Senior Girls course record holder in COSSA and 9th in Cross country OFSSA. Maria Linton just won the 3000m at OFSAA this past weekend! Maria runs and trains with the Durham Dragons. Outside of school she  has been very involved with the Northumberland Aquatic Club.  Beyond athletics, Maria is a swim coach and also works as a lifeguard.

FEMALE Athlete of the Year:  Aurora Brydson

Aurora is a multi-sport athlete, competing for St Mary Thunder athletics during all three seasons (Fall, Winter, and Spring) for the last 2 years, after focusing only on Track & Field in Grade 9. Aurora was an award winner in Grade 10 for Junior Girls Basketball and Junior Girls Volleyball, while also winning the Junior Female Athlete of the Year.  Aurora has qualified for OFSAA Track & Field every year of high school so far, while also qualifying as a member of the Senior Girls Volleyball team this winter. With 1 year left to go in high school, Aurora is certain to add to this impressive resume!

MALE Athlete of the Year:  

Nolan has been a multi-sport athlete every year in high school, competing for St Mary Thunder athletics during all three seasons (Fall, Winter, and Spring). Nolan was an award winner on the Boys Baseball team, leading them to a Kawartha Championship this season. Nolan also contributed positively on the Boys Volleyball and Basketball teams, while adding Badminton and Boys Rugby to his resume in Grade 12. Congratulations to Nolan for his determined effort and his many contributions to school athletics.

MALE Athlete of the Year: Abdullah Al-Salihi

Abdullah is a multi-sport athlete, competing for CCI athletics during all three seasons (Fall, Winter, and Spring). Abdullah was an award winner on the Boys Soccer team, who qualified for OFSAA in Windsor, and on the badminton team. Abdullah also contributed positively on the school swim team, track and field team and ultimate frisbee team. Congratulations to Abdullah for his determined effort and his many contributions to school athletics.

 

CO-FEMALE Athlete of the Year: Mackenzie St. John

Mackenzie has found the time to be actively involved playing five sports this year; basketball, volleyball, badminton, soccer, and ultimate frisbee. She excelled in all sports and was awarded team MVP for volleyball, basketball, and soccer plus she was also chosen for Coach’s award for basketball! Not only is she a great leader by example, she is also a supportive teammate. Mackenzie has captained multiple teams at CCI. She definitely deserved all the athletic accolades she has received! Congratulations, Mackenzie!

CO-FEMALE Athlete of the Year: Maci Davis

Maci has played and excelled in five sports this year, including basketball, hockey, badminton, soccer, and ultimate frisbee. She has been awarded MVP for hockey and also awarded the Coach’s award for basketball and soccer. Maci is a great vocal leader, as well as a leader by example, and a very supportive teammate. She was chosen as the captain of multiple teams at CCI. Congratulations Maci on displaying a multitude of athletic ability.

FEMALE Athlete of the Year: Maya Ryglewicz

Maya has played three or four sports each and every year of high school (COVID years included!). A regular basketball, volleyball and soccer member, Maya has also run cross-country, winning the Coaches’ award in 2019 as a grade 9 student. Maya also won Senior Female Athlete of the Year in 2022 - as a grade 11 student, beating out several other very deserving athletes a year older than her, all while maintaining an exceptional academic average each of her four years of high school. Congratulations on being such a well-rounded individual, Maya!

MALE Athlete of the Year: Jack Kelly

Jack was a four-sport athlete in his grade 12 year and a standout in all four: Soccer, hockey, badminton and baseball. A regular on the ice and ball diamond every year of high school (COVID excluded). A regular nominee for athlete of the week, Jack was the Boys Baseball MVP for 2023 and considered a leader and key member of each of the other three sports he played. Congratulations to you for your hard work and incredible athletic achievements, Jack!
