Ross Quigley Youth in Sport Award 2024 Winners
Chase Lalande attends Cobourg Collegiate Institute. Academically, Chase achieved an 88% grade average. He is a multi-sport athlete. For three years he was the captain of both the CCI hockey and baseball teams. In 2022 he was awarded baseball MVP. He also played for the junior and senior CCI volleyball teams. Chase’s dream is to play professional ball. He started out playing for the Northumberland Jacks. He eventually honed his skills and leadership as their captain. He also coached and assisted Jacks under 8 and 9 players and helped them develop their skill levels. Chase wanted to be challenged and improve his skills. In 2021 he joined the Toronto Mets in the Canadian Premier Baseball League, the highest league in Ontario. For the last two years Chase has played with the Ontario Yankees of the Premier Baseball League of Ontario in Ajax and experienced success at that level. This year Chase had to consider going to an NCAA school or a Canadian school. He decided to combine his studies with his baseball skills and has been accepted at the University of Ottawa on the baseball team and in the Bachelor of Commerce, Marketing program. Congratulations, Chase!

Maria Linton attends Cobourg Collegiate Institute. She excelled academically with a 93.6 average in grade 12. Maria is a hard working devoted athlete mainly in Track and Field and Cross Country running. She worked diligently at both events for three years in succession. Maria also found time to be on the school swim team and soccer team for one year. Outside of school she was on the NORAC Swim Team and was a competitive swimmer for four years. She displayed athletic leadership by instructing swimmers at all swim levels and also working as a life guard for the Municipality of Port Hope. She displayed resiliency as she battled health issues in grade 10, but she overcame this obstacle by persevering and regaining her confidence, and competitiveness. Maria also squeezed in 150 high school volunteer hours! In the fall she is headed to Western University to study Biochemistry and Genetics. Congratulations, Maria!

Ross Quigley Youth in Sport Award winners Maria Linton and Chase Lalande
The Cobourg Galloping Ghosts are the most famous team in Cobourg sports history. Managed by Fred Dufton, the Ghosts won eight Ontario championships, five after World War II. They were Canadian Dominion champions in 1946, 1948 and 1950. They were the first team in Canada to wear aluminum cleats and the second to wear white uniforms.
