Precious Corners’ own Kate Current has taken a major stride in her running career, signing her first professional contract with Nike Running, Canadian Running magazine reports.
The 27-year-old middle-distance runner finished 2025 on a high note by securing her third consecutive spot on Canada’s national team in the women’s 1,500 metres and lowering her personal best to 4:02.79, a mark that places her among the fastest Canadian women ever in the event.
Current’s path to a pro contract is rooted in years of dedication, from her early running days in Precious Corners and Cobourg to competing at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where she represented Canada in the 1,500 metres. Her upbringing in the area, including formative years with local coaches and university competition at Western University, helped build the foundation for her international success.
According to Canadian Running, discussions with Nike began after a breakthrough 2025 season that saw Current improve her personal best significantly and gain momentum on the European circuit. The professional contract brings resources and support that have been harder to secure for Canadian distance runners, giving Current the backing to focus on training, racing, and performance goals.
While Nike’s roster already includes several prominent athletes, Current becomes one of only a handful of Canadian female runners to sign with the brand, joining the ranks of elite national team peers. She plans to continue training with her longtime coach and compete internationally, with eyes on future competitions beyond 2026.
Her pro deal highlights a local success story for Precious Corners and Northumberland athletics and offers inspiration to young athletes in the region aiming for competitive sport at the highest levels.
