Abigail Bevan is a grade 12 student at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School in Cobourg. Not only has she maintained a 94% grade average she was also a volleyball player throughout high school and named co-captain of the senior girls' volleyball team during her last year. Abigail, also played on the school's basketball team while she was in grade nine. Her coach, Drew Quemby praised Abigail's skills and thorough understanding of her teammates, “Throughout high school she has competed on high level community volleyball teams and varsity teams. Abigail consistently demonstrates a strong desire to do well, and she has great skills to motivate and encourage her teammates.” Her personal statement reflected her maturity in how she views herself as the co-captain of the senior team. “One of the biggest reasons this role (co-captain) is important to me is because it represents trust. Being chosen as co-captain means that my coaches and teammates saw something in me – they saw someone who works hard, who listens, who encourages others, and who stayed focused even when things get tough.” Abigail also won the Leadership Award while playing Breakers volleyball. Her volunteer work included volunteering at the Silver Stick tournaments and she was a Link Leader for Grade nine students. Abigail had three university offers to consider. She has decided to accept the offer from Trent University and study Forensic Sciences. Congratulations, Abigail!

Emmett Clarke attends Cobourg Collegiate Institute. His Secondary School athletics include 5 sports. That is a truly remarkable accomplishment and it speaks volumes about his athletic versatility. In 2021-22 he played for the Junior Badminton team. In 2023 and 2025 his focus shifted to Senior Rugby. Another change in sport happened in 2024 when he was on the Senior Soccer team. In 2023 he was a Junior player on the CCI Junior Lacrosse and Hockey teams. Since beginning high school he has been heavily involved in Rugby and Hockey. In 2025 he played for the U18 and Men's Cobourg Saxons teams. From 2021-2023 Emmett played for the U15 Clarington Zone AAA and the U16 Northumberland Nighthawks hockey teams. He was named Assistant Captain for the Nighthawk squad. From 2023-2025 he skated for the Clarington Zone AA U18 team and the Port Hope Panthers. Two awards he captured were the Coaches Award in Badminton and along with his teammates, a Civic Award for Community Involvement. He accomplished all this sporting involvement while amassing 70 hours of volunteer work and maintaining an 88% grade average. He received two university offers, a Bachelor of Commerce Major Sport and Event Management from Guelph and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from Queen's University. Congratulations, Emmett!

Hunter Wright is a grade 12 student at Cobourg Collegiate Institute. He is a three-sport athlete, excelling in baseball, hockey, and volleyball. While attending high school he played junior and senior volleyball (2022, 2024). Hunter also played CCI Varsity Baseball from 2021-2025. He still found time to play CCI Varsity hockey from 2022-2025. In his last year he was chosen as captain of the hockey team. Regarding community athletics, he climbed the baseball ladder beginning with the Northumberland Jacks U15 (2021-22) and joined the EOBA Ontario Summer Games team U15 in 2022. He also played for the Peterborough Tigers U16 (2022-2024) then proceeded to move onto the Ontario Yankees U18 (2024-25). When winter arrived, he played hockey for the Northumberland Nighthawks AA U16-U18 (2021-25). Also, for three years (2023-25) he was an AP player for the Junior C Port Hope Panthers. He volunteered with the Northumberland Jacks as an assistant coach working with players in U12, U10, and U16 divisions. He garnered a lot of individual awards over the years at the secondary school and community levels. Starting in 2023 he was awarded the CCI Athletic Character Award, the CCI Junior Volleyball MVP, and the CCI Varsity Boys Baseball MVP. What an amazing year! In 2023 he won the Northumberland U16AA MVP award and the Steve Smith Top Defense award. In 2024-25 he once again came home with more hardware. He was the Northumberland Hockey U18 MVP and also captured the Steve Smith Top Defense in the u14 and up category in 2024-25. Hunter will be attending Chesapeake College in Maryland on a baseball scholarship. Congratulations, Hunter!

Ross Quigley Youth in Sport Award 2024 Winners

Chase Lalande attends Cobourg Collegiate Institute. Academically, Chase achieved an 88% grade average. He is a multi-sport athlete. For three years he was the captain of both the CCI hockey and baseball teams. In 2022 he was awarded baseball MVP. He also played for the junior and senior CCI volleyball teams. Chase’s dream is to play professional ball. He started out playing for the Northumberland Jacks. He eventually honed his skills and leadership as their captain. He also coached and assisted Jacks under 8 and 9 players and helped them develop their skill levels. Chase wanted to be challenged and improve his skills. In 2021 he joined the Toronto Mets in the Canadian Premier Baseball League, the highest league in Ontario. For the last two years Chase has played with the Ontario Yankees of the Premier Baseball League of Ontario in Ajax and experienced success at that level. This year Chase had to consider going to an NCAA school or a Canadian school. He decided to combine his studies with his baseball skills and has been accepted at the University of Ottawa on the baseball team and in the Bachelor of Commerce, Marketing program. Congratulations, Chase!

Maria Linton attends Cobourg Collegiate Institute. She excelled academically with a 93.6 average in grade 12. Maria is a hard working devoted athlete mainly in Track and Field and Cross Country running. She worked diligently at both events for three years in succession. Maria also found time to be on the school swim team and soccer team for one year. Outside of school she was on the NORAC Swim Team and was a competitive swimmer for four years. She displayed athletic leadership by instructing swimmers at all swim levels and also working as a life guard for the Municipality of Port Hope. She displayed resiliency as she battled health issues in grade 10, but she overcame this obstacle by persevering and regaining her confidence, and competitiveness. Maria also squeezed in 150 high school volunteer hours! In the fall she is headed to Western University to study Biochemistry and Genetics. Congratulations, Maria!

Ross Quigley Youth in Sport Award 2023 Winners

Award Year

Andrex Kellar is a grade twelve honour roll student at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School. He was the captain of the rugby team for three years and received the Rugby Coaches Award for the Junior team in 2019 and the Senior team in 2022. A personal achievement was being invited to attend the U18 Team Canada Rugby Central Camp. He also wrestled for two years as a junior and a senior and won COSSA Wrestling Gold in the 72kg Boys division and qualified for the OFSSA provincial Championships. He gave back to his sports community by volunteering as the assistant coach for two years with the Cobourg Saxons. His volunteer involvement in the community included the Cobourg Saxons Beach Festival and the Cobourg Saxon's “Give Rugby A Try” in 2018, 2019, and 2022. He has been accepted at Durham College and will focus on his program choice, Automotive Technician Service and Management. Congrats Andrex!

Sydney Pipe attends St. Mary Secondary School. She is the definition of a multi-talented high school academic and athlete. She played hockey, rugby, soccer and basketball and still maintained a 97% average. Sydney served as a coach and mentor to young hockey players. She also volunteered at the Silver Stick Tournament, Charity Mud Run, Terry Fox Run and the Pride Bench Initiative while racking up 50 hours of community service. She has been highly involved in community sports, playing hockey in Leaside and Clarington, while excelling in soccer and rugby for Cobourg, Quinte, and Northumberland. Her individual awards include most valuable defenseman in hockey, Clarington Mayor's Award for Academics and Involvement, and the Character In Sport Award in hockey. Sydney will attend Queen's University in the fall to pursue a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Life Sciences and Biochemistry. She will be playing rugby for Queen's women's team, as well. Congrats, Sydney!

Award Year

Katrina Badali attends CCI where she has achieved a 95% average. She will be attending Queen’s University in September, pursuing dual Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education degrees. Katrina has participated on multiple sport teams in school and the community such as cross country, rep volleyball, ultimate, tennis, badminton, track and field and competitive dance.

She has won MVP awards in cross country and dance and has also received recognition for Academic excellence and character in dance and physical and health education. Katrina has demonstrated her superior leadership skills and commitment to community by volunteering over 200 hours, both in the school and in her community, with organizations and events such as The Rose Quest Project, Interact Club, Relay for Life, and the 30 Hour Famine. Katrina, we are very proud to present to you tonight, the Ross Quigley Youth in Sport Award. Congratulations!

A grade 12 student at CCI, Brendan Woodward has demonstrated excellence in a variety of varsity sports, including soccer, volleyball, basketball, tennis, track and field, ultimate and cross country. He has qualified as an individual for the OFSAA (all Ontario) Cross Country Championships and for the OFSAA East Regionals in Track. Brendan won many awards, including Junior Athlete of the Year and is a student council member.

 In the community, he plays rep soccer and volleyball and referees. He recently won a Cobourg Civic Award in Athletics. He volunteers at Northumberland Hills Hospital in the HELP Elder Program, with KPR’s Journey of Hope, and with the Fare Share Food Bank. Brendan is a model teammate, an outstanding leader, and a committed volunteer while maintaining a 96% average in school. He will be attending the University of Calgary in September, where he will be pursuing a Bachelor of Health Sciences degree in his quest to become a doctor. Congratulations, Brendan!
