The establishment and operation of a sports hall of fame for the purposes:
- To honour the names and deeds of those whose athletic prowess brought fame to their community and to themselves
- To celebrate those whose interest in and work for sport, resulted in a climate which benefited the community
- To collect, to preserve, to exhibit, to promote those objects which are determined to be significant to the sports history of our community
- To develop and foster an appreciation for how each sport in Cobourg and District was founded and became what it is today
The Cobourg Galloping Ghosts are the most famous team in Cobourg sports history. Managed by Fred Dufton, the Ghosts won eight Ontario championships, five after World War II. They were Canadian Dominion champions in 1946, 1948 and 1950. They were the first team in Canada to wear aluminum cleats and the second to wear white uniforms.
